New Kid in Town

Winter is barely come and I can’t help but wish it gone. I miss the beach and the grass and the leaves and the warm gentle wind that the cold has chased away. I miss the ripe and nutty smell of autumn leaves. I miss the soft sweet grass of spring and the brilliant green of fiddle heads as they unfurl in the morning sun. I miss the lingering heat of the sand at the beach as the sun retires for another day. God help me but I miss the humid heat of August with the cicadas screaming murder in the trees and leaving transparent skins hanging like empty corpses from the pine trees at the edge of the yard.
I want to fill my lungs with the smell of flowers and dirt and raspberries and tomatoes. I want to lay face down in the grass and watch the marching formation of ants on parade while the bumblebees buzz a gentle accompaniment as they trundle from flower to flower. I can almost hear the snap of linen as the sheets dance in the breeze. I can almost feel the warmth of the sun on my back. I want to fill my hands up with the good soil of my garden and let it blacken my palms and crust under my nails. I want to sit by the bonfire on a night so clear and star filled that it’s quite easy to believe that I am sitting at the very center of the universe.
I know I might feel differently on a particular winter day. That winter day will be windless and warm. The sky will be clear and the light from the sun will be so bright that the reflection off of the snow will be almost too much to bear. Everything will be crisp and clean, a new and unknown place to explore with mysteries to discover. That day I know I won’t think about the cold and the wet and the sleeping earth.

That day is not today. The ground is unyielding and the sky is grey. Winter, just arrived, seems so weighty and solemn. I miss the passion of the waking, living earth now frozen under the weight of ice and snow. What I wouldn’t give for the light caress of a spring breeze, the heat of a summer night and the sharp kiss of autumn.

  4. Hi there,Saw your comment on aims site about the razor strap. My mom used that on us the whole time we were growing up. My brother and I got tired enough of it that one day we took it, crawed into the attic, and dropped it between the walls. She looked for it for a while and we never owned up to it. We were old enough that I think she was getting scared of using it. She tried to slap me one time when I was a senior and I said "Don\’t you ever F\’ing touch me again". Well, I had NEVER talked back to her and this stopped her in her tracks, she lowered her hand, went in her room and slammed the door. She walked around for a few days not talking to me and just looking at me from the corner of her eyes. She never even tried to hit me again.

  7. Hmm…I would definitely agree about the mustache, I was getting really creeped out. Although not as creeped out as the lady friend of his who\’s really serial killer-ish.I\’m wondering if maybe he was the one who put her away. Cause it sure looked like she blames him for something.

  8. I\’m tired of the winter too, it is FREEZING, and I think my blood has thinned out. I\’m always cold. I\’d move to Fla. but don\’t feel like having to evacuate several times a yr b/c of the hurricanes. Sigh.

  14. @Ne-er do well-17 does seem a little too much for early December. I really hope this isn\’t a trend setter for the year. ;P@RuthI know some people who wear shorts all year round even when the temperature is below zero. We are a hardy bunch up here. Winter is, most simply put, not my favourite time of year. It might be the lack of sunshine but it\’s most likely that I am allergic to the cold-I wonder if the OHIP will pay to send me south? ;`@Marcuslol Marcus these feet are cold in the middle of summer. It\’s just a cross I have to bear. ;)@Uncle DavinGo ahead. I take full responsibility. Go back to bed, pull the covers over your head and dream about sun and sand and warm summer breezes. It makes me feel better just thinking about it. =)@RobinaMy mate had the same sort of thing with his mom but it was a wooden spoon. She was chasing him and he turned around, took it out of her hand and that was that. I think he was around 10 at the time. I left home when I was 16 so that was when the line was drawn for me.@Lemonlol The weather channel said that there was a cool breeze blowing through Texas. How about I send a little snow your way and you send some cookies mine? =D@CherylGroannnn…Don\’t remind me! htl@Brenda (JdJ)I know. I\’d be spoiled if I got everything I wanted anyway. A little ice and snow is probably good for my soul but like most medicine the taste leaves something to be desired ;*@JonathanI am pretty sure that she\’s the daughter of the guy that buried Nick. He was freaking out over a bug on his arm and "G" received that mysterious cassette tape a couple of weeks ago. Caution…plot line developing!@AmyStay and freeze- go and blow away in the wind. Damned if you do and damned if you don\’t. I think I\’m opting for alcohol to warm the inside and a big fire to warm the outside. Compromise can be a good thing (unlike Martha\’s wiener soup).@PappyThanks and take it easy on the shovelling. It\’s a long winter. You don\’t want to put the back out in December and have to hire a Toad to dig you out! lol@AliciaSnowplow company eh? Well you\’re definitely in a great profession for your area. Extra business before Christmas is always nice too! Actually we need the driveway done…it\’s too bad you live so far away! =)Stop by anytime.L@RobertI\’ve never been out east but I hear that it\’s beautiful in the winter. It certainly sounds like that when you write about it! I hope you\’re feeling okayTake care!@Lottie_MaelolI\’ve given up making snow angels as my dog always takes this as a sign I want her to sit on my chest and lick my face…dog spit and cold air are not a great combination :PBut I do like the picture forming in my mind of you scrambling up from your wintry angel…it just seems like the sort of fun thing I could see you doing. Stay warm,Lorna

  16. You write of your dismay so much more beautifully than I even deserve to read. Here in Minnesota, I usually speak of the weather like this:"God! I hate it here! It\’s effin\’ freezing!"The effect is not quite as lyrical as yours…Sending warmth and gratitude,~k

  17. What I wouldnt give for a chalet in Austria or Switzerland this time of year. Snow, crisp bright mornings, steaming cups of hot chocolate by the fire. But when it comes to reality and the UK, Ill have a british summer every time. Craig x

  18. @PatWinter weight gain can always be covered by the extra warm clothes needed for the cold. I think it\’s God\’s way of showing a little mercy. ;P@KayOh I say that as well…just wait until February swings around!@CraigI know what you mean…everything always looks so inviting in the travel brochures but picture snow or vacation snow is always nicer than the real have to live with it thing. xxL
